“A spiritual religion of humanity is the hope of the future.
By this is not meant what is ordinarily called a universal religion, a system, a thing of creed and intellectual belief and dogma and outward rite.
Mankind has tried unity by that means; it has failed and deserved to fail, because there can be no universal religious system, one in mental creed and vital form.
The inner spirit is indeed one, but more than any other the spiritual life insists on freedom and variation in its self-expression and means of development.
A religion of humanity means the growing realization that there is a secret Spirit, a divine Reality, in which we are all one; that humanity is its highest present vehicle on earth, that the human race and the human being are the means by which it will progressively reveal itself here….
A spiritual oneness which would create a psychological oneness not dependent upon any intellectual or outward uniformity and compel a oneness of life not bound up with its mechanical means of unification, but ready always to enrich its secure unity by a free inner variation and a freely varied outer self-expression, this would be the basis for a higher type of human existence.”
From Sri Aurobindo, The Ideal of Human Unity
There are so many beautiful, generous, sincere, surrendered human beings in this world. There are a lot of other kinds too.. but I’ve had the privilege of meeting and being together with those who are sincerely committed to bringing the Divine into this world – through our own lives and contributing to the lives of others and the work we are involved with.
We’ve studied and meditated and worked on ourselves in different schools and with different teachers and gurus. Practices, disciplines, information, wisdom, world views, tenets, rules and structures have generally been a part of what we have immersed ourselves in.
As Sri Aurobindo speaks above so beautifully – it’s time for us to come together in the depths of who we are – to discover the unity that is self-existent, the unity that underlies our incredible distinctness and uniqueness. When I created the Evolutionary Collective nine years ago, I was convinced that we needed a new model for coming together and developing at the highest levels we could imagine as human beings. I knew that there were thousands, maybe millions of people who were ready, who had surrendered & studied and been students of different schools or religions or psycho-spiritual approaches and had come to the end of what they could truly gain out of participating in those environments. They were feeling the constriction of needing to leave out parts of their particular uniqueness or what they felt might be important to develop in the confines of the particular teaching or perspective.
There’s an important stage of development, where you need to surrender, be open, receptive and ernest and embody the qualities of being a great student or disciple. Those who have become true students are distinctly different from those who have dabbled, tasted and never really given themselves wholeheartedly. They can learn and some things can change, but something fundamental, the real development that can be accomplished within a school (or teaching) doesn’t occur. There is a kind of discernible radiance that surrender displays in someone. Interestingly, it takes the same capacities to love profoundly and deeply. When the fire of love has been surrendered to, it shatters and dissolves everything that causes separation.
The guru model, the top down – charismatic leader and teaching that dominates from the center and radiates down to those attracted to the teacher/teaching – is an ancient, hierarchical model that had both served us is inevitably limiting and sometimes dangerous – not only for the students but the teacher in the center who is put in a false position of power and influence. We love the certainty and strength that a strong leader provides and it’s easy to be swept up in the groove in consciousness that it is. For individual awakening and individual empowerment, you can go a long way in this hierarchical model.
The new consciousness and higher level of human development involves moving from the individual agenda to a more fluid consciousness and the potent creativity of that occurs in the space ‘between us’ – the ‘higher we’ as some call it. There’s more to be said about this new consciousness, but for this blog I want to address that the ‘new wine’ also needs to be in ‘new wineskins’. The model for this awakening needs to be different.
The Evolutionary Collective is a living experiment in creating a new model. It is an evolving incubator for the highest levels of human consciousness and development. The logos of the teaching is arising through the living oneness that we are sharing. As a skilled spiritual teacher I am facilitating the emerging power of this consciousness in a new way – having mastered other ways of teaching and working with individual awakening and development, I am poised to caringly cultivate the field without becoming central. The people who enter into this model, don’t want to just surrender and receive. They have worked on themselves in various ways and are now in position to be called forth fully. They want to create, give and surrender into a greater orchestration that is only possible together. The richness of who they are and all that they have developed, entering into this committed connectivity, activates an extraordinary upliftment for everyone involved. The intimacy and closeness (like with a Guru or Spiritual Teacher) with each other allows for the domains of mastery and awakened consciousness in each person to act as a catalyst to the others in the group.
There’s more to come on this subject – but suffice it to say, that new models, new emergent kinds of teaching, new ways of coming together are necessary for this new consciousness to be fully birthed into the world.
