Unitive Flow: A new evolutionary potential

By Carolyne Mathlin

Human beings have always been fascinated by flow states.

Athletes experience them. Musicians know them. Artists, dancers, lovers, and mystics all describe moments when something takes over, and life becomes effortless, creative, and alive.

For most of us, those moments are precious because they’re rare.

We catch glimpses of flow in these experiences, but sustaining that kind of effortless participation in life can be difficult, if not impossible.

We know how difficult it can be to move beyond inertia, overthinking, hesitation, and the many habits that keep us trapped inside our separate experience of life. There often seems to be an extra effort required to break free of the self-concern and egoic patterning that keep us outside of flow.

Unitive Flow begins when we move beyond our isolated subjective worlds and enter a reality of shared participation.

As we give our attention to the subtler dimensions of reality and to our connection with another, a portal opens. We begin to enter a new world of consciousness, a new kind of existence that is no longer organized around the separate self. This shared inner space of unity and mutually awakened reality is a new frontier in consciousness.

The practice of Mutual Awakening gives us access to this possibility. By focusing on another person in a precise way, we move beyond being located exclusively within our separate sense of self and begin to resonate with a larger circuitry of life. Creativity, intelligence, and movement arise from a source that is not merely personal.

In a world where nearly everything is organized around the separate self, Unitive Flow reveals a new possibility for humanity: that human beings can participate in a reality that is sourced through unity. As we participate in a consciousness sourced through unity, we gain access to a larger current of intelligence, creativity, and aliveness. What once seemed rare and fleeting becomes a natural expression of how life moves when we are no longer living from separation.

When we enter that reality, there is a sense that everything wants to be touched, included, sourced, and brought into the living current of evolution itself. The moment we return to self-concern or overthinking, we can feel ourselves step outside of that current.

Flow ceases to be a rare experience that arrives unpredictably. It becomes a natural expression of a reality organized through shared unity.

Unitive Flow offers the possibility of not only being in the flow in life, but being in that state with others. In Unitive Flow, we become a new kind of human where we are sourced by an identity based in unity and uniqueness.

In Unity,
